6th Dan

Hugh (Bungie)  is currently a 6th Dan in Wado Ryu Karate, with a wealth of experience in Karate, Kickboxing and Boxing. Hugh has been training in martial arts for the last 30 years.

Hugh started in the world of Martial Arts at the age of 16.  After spending the first couple of years trying out Lau Gar Kung Fu, he turned his thoughts to Karate and begun with the U.K.K.W. In 1979 he looked for another club to train in and found the Budokan Wadokai Karate Club - a club that offered him what he wanted.  A good instructor, good karate, good fighting "and a great bunch of lands". His first instructor was Peter Jones and when he left the club was then instructed by Roberto ('Swede') Mastangelli 5th Dan,  'Swede' changed so many things for 'Bungie' and considers himself privileged to have been instructed by him.  'Bungie' was the first 'Dan' grade that 'Swede' produced, so it was therefore only fitting that 'Bungie' should have been the one who took over the club in 1994 after the sad death of his instructor and mentor 'Swede', who died of cancer.

Since his time in charge of the club, 'Bungie' has produced many Dan grades, and junior and cadet Welsh Internationals. His philosophy for training is to be able to demonstrate and do what you teach. He believes that you must be able to enjoy your karate and everyone in the 'Dojo'  must feel part of the session. Everyone needs personal encouragement and above all, your students must look up to you and respect you.

Hugh is always looking for new challenges for his Karate and decided that Kickboxing was a good addition to add to his skills, and like his Karate he puts 110% effort into it, winning a number of titles on the way, He now runs his own Kickboxing club within the Budokan Wales Group.

Bungie's achievements are innumerable. He has competed at all levels in karate kumite, winning World, British and Welsh titles, individuals and team events. He has also won medals at National level in Kata along with titles of Welsh kickboxing Champion and fought for the British team, AND had a short spell in pro-boxing.

He has had a vast experience of coaching through the years, with the club and youth coach for the Welsh National team, coaching to the highest level, with his students winning medals at Local, National and International level competitions.

To say he is an all-rounder would be under-estimating his abilities.

Hugh runs the "Budokan Wadokai Karate and Kickboxing Club", at the Gwent Boxing Club in Townhill, Swansea.
